Feis
Na Hearadh
Feis Eilean
na Hearadh has been in existence since 1992. It is a tuition Feis for
children aged 8 -18.
Previously children from Harris joined Feis Eilean An
Fhraoich in Lewis, a testimony to the dedication of the children and the
parents but since this involved a round trip of 120 miles, plus time spent
learning lines, practising, etc, it was felt that, if possible a Feis
should be developed in Harris. The first Feisan received some funding from
H.I.D.B. and with this strenuous fund raising by parents, were self
financing.
Subsequently, the childrens’ Feis agreed to amalgamate
with Comunn Drama Na Hearadh and Feis Eilean Na Hearadh to form Harris Arts
and Heritage.
The Feis also encourages the playing of Chanter,
Clarsach, Drums, Guitar, Accordian, keyboard as well as Highland and
Hebridean dancing. This is particularly valuable in a community like
Harris. The Feis takes pride in the fact that there is now in Harris a
nucleus of developing young musicians, who, but for the Feis movement would
not have taken an interest in traditional music.
In the future
it is hoped that the Feis will consolidate the work already done and
progress to giving youngsters an understanding of traditional crafts and an
interest in traditional Gaelic story telling.
